What is ABRSM?

ABRSM is the UK’s largest music education body, one of its largest music publishers and the world’s leading provider of music exams, offering assessments to more than 630,000 candidates in 93 countries every year.

ABRSM’s mission is to inspire achievement in music. In partnership with the Royal Schools of Music, we support high-quality music-making and learning around the world. We offer pathways and resources for learners and teachers that help build musical skills, provide goals and encourage progress.

Exams and assessments

Our core activity is the provision of graded music exams, assessments and diplomas. An ABRSM grade has a worldwide currency and our exams are designed to motivate students at all levels and ages, providing realistic goals and tangible rewards for their achievements.

ABRSM Examiners

All ABRSM examiners understand what it is like to learn to play or sing and the time and effort it takes to progress in music. Their motivation in being an examiner is to encourage developing musicians. They are people skilled in providing a supportive atmosphere in an exam and giving a fair, independent assessment.

ABRSM examiners are all highly qualified, experienced musicians. They might be teachers, performers or conductors. Over 700 examiners combine their own skills, abilities, knowledge and understanding with those developed through our comprehensive and rigorous examiner training.

Maintaining standards

We expect all our examiners to work to consistently high standards, and we have thorough quality assurance processes in place to ensure this happens.

  • Moderation - a team of highly experienced examiners act as moderators. They sit in with examiners as they work to check they are examining to the required standards. This happens for all examiners at least every two to three years.

  • Mark form reviews – we review each examiner’s mark forms every two to three years.

  • Statistical reviews – we regularly record, monitor and review the marks awarded by all examiners. We also provide continuing professional development for our examiners through annual conferences, regular seminars, observation and mentoring.

Alfred's Basic Prep Course, Starting with Lesson Book A is specifically designed for beginners who are five years old and up.

Through the use of appealing music and attractive illustrations, it is no wonder that Lesson Book A is the most widely used young beginner's piano book now available.

This course takes into consideration the normal attention span, as well as the small-sized hands of the young beginner. Shortly after beginning, the young student will be able to play "Merrily We Roll Along."
